Spectacled owls are the largest tropical owl species in its range of Central and South America. They are primarily nocturnal hunters.

Spectacled owls roost in dense foliage during the day. Their diet consists of mammals up to the size of opossums, bats, smaller birds and occasionally insects. They prefer to hunt from a perch, using their hearing to detect movement.
Small mammals including mice and the occasional possum. They can take birds up to the size of jays, as well as frogs
