African Penguins

African Penguins

The African penguin lives in coastal areas of southern Africa. It is a charismatic species that is known for its very loud donkey-like braying noises, distinctive black and white feathers and large breeding colonies. African penguins are sustainability heroes because they are the ultimate eco builders and also extremely energy efficient.

  • Although clumsy on land, African penguins are extremely efficient and streamlined swimmers. Using their modified wings to cut through the water at a great speed.
  • African penguins dig their nests in layers of guano (mounds of penguin poo). They then line their nest with lots of types of repurposed material that includes seaweed, rocks, shells, bones, vegetation pieces and feathers.

Made out of an eco-fibreglass alternative made with recycled waste from around the zoo these lifelike African Penguin sculptures emulates how this incredible species uses sustainability in the wild to make their lives more efficient.

You can find our amazing sculpture next to our African Penguin habitat!
